We have a bunch of finals in FBS (1-A) and FCS (1-AA) games. Let's take a look at what's passed and failed in our FBS action in games that have gone final today.
Southern Mississippi 41, Memphis 19
Pass: The Eagles ran up 27 1st downs. They ran up 510 yards of offense. Austin Davis passed for 278 yards and 3 TDs, while Kendrick Hardy rushed for 101 yards off of just 11 carries. The Eagles could do nothing wrong today.
Fail: Memphis has avergaed less than 10 points per game in the last two weeks. While the Eagles were rolling up 27 1st downs, the Tigers had 10. Looks like Memphis went from a team that looked like they could compete even in losing a couple of weeks ago to a team that is completely and totally lost again.
Miami (Ohio) 27, Central Michigan 20
Pass: Zac Dysert hit Andrew Cruse on a 71 yard scoring pass with 0:45 left in the game to come away with the win, their 4th of the season. Mike Heywood has placed himself directly in MAC Coach of the Year range. Dysert passed for 406 yards on the game.
Fail: Dan Enos has taken some serious knocks in his first season. The defense completely collapsed at the end of the game to let such a huge play get by in such a critical game.
East Carolina 33, NC State 27 (OT)
Pass: Dominique Davis passed for 376 yards and 2 scores and then rushed for the game winner in OT as the Pirates survived blowing a 21-0 lead to take out the Wolfpack.
Fail: Nc State obviously did not bring their A game, and it would seem the NCSU is having some focus issues as the season progresses into tougher competition. Russell Wilson was picked 3 times.
Pittsburgh 45, Syracuse 14
Pass: Tino Sunseri is starting to develop at QB for the Panthers, and he passed for 280 yards and 4 scores today. Even Dion Lewis started to loosen up, as he rushed for 80 yards off of just 14 carries.
Fail: The Orangemen had a shot to go to 2-0 and control the Big East race early, but suddenly became the horrible team that they have been again. It's all about consistency. 4 turnovers just won't cut it.
Florida State 24, Boston College 19
Pass: The Seminoles did almost nothing right in the win, but still found a way to go get it. Great effort by Bert Reed, whose 42 yard run was the difference.
Fail: FSU turned over the ball 5 times, and Ponder tossed 3 picks. Quite clearly, the Seminoles were lucky today. They can't continue this trend.
Clemson 31, Maryland 7
Pass: Andre Ellington returned a kick 87 yards for a score, and Xavier Brewer returned a pick 61 yards for a score, and the defense shut down the Terp rushing game (44 yards).
Fail: Maryland turned the ball over 3 times, and if you look at their second half schedule, it may get ugly from here out.
Purdue 28, Minnesota 17
Pass: Rob Henry passed for a score and rushed for 3 more on the day to account for all 4 Boiler scores on the day. Purdue has found a nice new look.
Fail: Tim Brewster...step into my office...why?...because you're fucking fired, that's why. (Crazy psycho killer from "There's Something About Mary")
Michigan State 26, Illinois 6
Pass: Kirk Cousins passed for 214 yards and a score, and the Spartans survived a game that was not very pretty to look at. They are now 7-0 for the first time in 44 years.
Fail: The rushing game that has been so incredible for the Spartans was held to nothing. Baker and Bell were held to a combined 37 yards.
Indiana 36, Arkansas State 34
Pass: Damarlo Belcher and Tandon Doss both went for over 100 yards receiving, as super Ben Chappell passed for 381 yards and 4 scores to help the Hoosiers win a shootout.
Fail: The Red Wolves had chances to win this game, and Ryan Aplin scored 4 times, 2 by air, 2 by ground. It's now obvious that he is all that ASU has.
Missouri 30, Texas A&M 9
Pass: Blaine Gabbert passed for 361 yards and 3 scores, all with a hip pointer, and the Missouri D held again. The Tigers now control their own destiny in the Big 12 North.
Fail: If you look at the stat sheet, this game should have been even, but it was anything but. Aggie coach Mike Sherman is going to feel some severe heat this week.
Georgia 43, Vanderbilt 0
Pass: The Bulldogs have managed to get some traction against the easy part of the schedule. This is their second straight game scoring 40 or more points.
Fail: The Commodores had 8 1st downs for the day, and only had 165 yards of offense.
Eastern Michigan 41, Ball State 38
Pass: Ron English gets his first win as HC at EMU. It only too a season and a half to get it.
Fail: Ball State lets another one get away, and this time there are no excuses about playing superior talent.
Temple 28, Bolwing Green 27
Pass: Bernard Pierce is back, and Temple gets the win. Mike Gerardi played very efficiently in relief of Chester Stewart. Temple isn't dead yet in the MAC race. To credit Bowling Green, Kamar Jorden picked up 11 grbas for 142 yards at WR (MVP Candidate at WR).
Fail: Temple only had 12 1st downs and almost blew a 2 TD lead at the end.
Miami 28, Duke 13
Pass: The Hurricanes survived a sloppy 1st quarter and the D forced 7 Duke turnovers to get an unimpressive win on the road.
Fail: Duke's 7 turnovers, obviously, and their failure to create any momentum from Miami's lazy play early.
Colorado State 43, UNLV 10
Pass: Pete Thomas completed 10 of 14 passes for 233 yards and 3 scores. The Rams really showed some flashes for the future today, but that future had better be sooner than later.
Fail: The Rebels have been outscored 92-20 on the road the last two weeks. Bobby Hauck has to be losing his mind right now.
Ohio 38, Akron 10
Pass: The Bobcats rushed for 259 yards and they bulldozed Akron, but then again, Akron should be used to that by now.
Fail: Akron succeeded in failing, and will more than maintain their dead last ranking in the PRS this week. Yay Zips!!!
Rutgers 23, Army 20 (OT)
Pass: The Scarlet Knights have now won two in a row, and came back from a 17-3 deficit in the 4th to force the OT. Chas Dodd passed for 249 yards and a score in the win after taking over as starting QB.
Fail: Army had a chance at a big road win, and blew a 2 TD lead in the 4th to lose. The defense was supposed to be a strength, but they sure do go away at strange times this season. Trent Steelman and Jared Hassin big games wasted.
Notre Dame 44, Western Michigan 20
Pass: Dayne Crist is finally getting into the spread offense for the Irish, but don't get too excite about an Irish win over a MAC school. Isn't it aginst some law somewhere that the Irish never play MAC schools?
Fail: The Broncos weren't in this game when they got off of the bus. They served up as a patsy for the Irish to pad their record this season. Can't blame the Broncos from taking the check though.
Rice 34, Houston 31
Pass: Merry Christmas, David Bailiff. All of the injuries that the COugars have suffered are now biting them squarely in the ass. Nick Fanuzzi did have a DECENT game at QB for the Owls.
Fail: The Cougars looked ridiculous today. After back to back losses, the wheels may not be completely off of the wagin yet, but they wobble like hell.
Northern Illinois 45, Buffalo 14
Pass: Chandler Harnish passed for 160 yards and rushed for another 75, While Chad Spann rushed for 111 yards, and look who's waking up at the right time...the Huskies!
Fail: Jerry Davis completed only 7 of 23 passes and was held to 101 yards. The Bulls don't stand a chance when Davis can't get going.
Navy 28, SMU 21
Pass: The Middies would not be denied, and they took advantage of a leaky SMU D to drive down for what was an easy score. SMU gave them the score to save the clock, and it turned out to be the gift that didn't keep on giving.
Fail: The D let the Mustangs down at the end of the game, and they never tried to clog the holes on the inside.
Virginia Tech 52, Wake Forest 21
Pass: Tech's mission to win the ACC after a miserable start continues to cruise. It's good for them that the ACC is so awful this season. Tyrod Taylor passed for 294 yards on the day.
Fail: Tanner Price completed 3 of 16 passes. I could have done that...
Georgia Tech 42, Middle Tennessee 14
Pass: Anthony Allen rushed for 2 scores and Josh Nesbitt scored as well on the ground, and Tech cruised.
Fail: Dwight Dasher's return has been a complete bust. 4 picks today. Bench him now.
Iowa 38, Michigan 28
Pass: Ricky Stanzi passed for 247 yards and Adam Robinson rushed for 144 yards. Iowa just did their thing.
Fail: The game was not this close. Denard Robinson also got hurt, which is what I have warned about when it comes to his style of play. Tate Forcier picked up the slack, but it was too late.
Oklahoma State 34, Texas Tech 17
Pass: Justin Blackmon had another huge game, and he is at the top of our MVP standings at WR. He should definately be in the Heisman mix as well. He is a huge player. Let's not foget the great game by Kendell Hunter, who rushed for 126 yards and is also on my MVP list at RB.
Fail: Taylor Potts was minimized and only found the endzone once. The Red Raiders are completely out of the Big 12 South race.
Texas 20, Nebraska 13
Pass: Garrett Gilbert rushed for 2 scores in the major road upset, and the D completely shut down Taylor Martinez.
Fail: The Huskers were cruising until now, and they should have hammered this Texas team. Now they have allowed Missouri to overtake the Big 12 North. Embarrassing.
USC 48, Cal 14
Pass: Matt Barkley shredded the BEars for 5 TDs and 351 yards passing. He's getting better every week.
Fail: This is why Jeff Tedford is not a great coach. Dominate UCLA one week, and let the momentum crash on his own fucking head. Have you seen enough yet, Bear Fan?
Auburn 65, Arkansas 43
Pass: Cameron Newton is all Auburn really has, but it works. He rished for 189 yards and 3 scores, and passed for 138 and another, and the single game record for total points in an SEC game was broken.
Fail: Obviously...defense...both of them until the 4th, when Auburn finally let the D out of the locker room.
TCU 31, BYU 3
Pass: The Frogs have given up 3 points in the last 3 games. Now they need to lose those fucking horrible helmets.
Fail: So Jamie Hill was the scapegoat for BYU's defensive woes? Who's to blame now that Mendenhall calls the plays?
Louisiana Tech 48, Idaho 35
Pass: Ross Jenkins passed for 412 yarda and 3 scores off of 30 completions. Yes, Bulldogs, that is what an offense looks like. Now remember it.
Fail: What the hell has happened to the Vandals? Not as bad as before, but failing to build off of last season. What a shame.
UAB 21, UTEP 6
Pass: The Blazers switch to Bryan Ellis at QB, and he passes for 271 yards and 3 scores. The defense showed up too. This win gives Calloway some credit, but he has to build off of this to save his ass from the flames.
Fail: Trevor Vittatoe and Donald Buckram. When your 2 biggest stars flame out, you lose. They both flamed out. This was just a stupid loss for the Miners, who had cracked our top 25 this week.
Utah 30, Wyoming 6
Pass: The Utes were a bit sloppy early on on offense, but they built up speed as the day wore on. This was basically an easy win as the Utes continue to fly under the radar.
Fail: Wyoming has fallen like a rock. Not sure what has happened, but Austen Carta-Samuels has regressed a great deal.
North Carolina 44, Virginia 10
Pass: TJ Yates is becoming a great leader for these Tar Heels. He passed for 329 yardsa and 3 scores, and the Heels are getting better and better every week. The distractions aren;t having the same effect anymore.
Fail: Mike Verica was picked off 3 times with no scores. Enough said.
Kentucky 31, South Carolina 28
Pass: Mike Hartline passed for 4 scores, and UK came back from a 28-10 deficit. The Wildcats could be the cardiac kids of the SEC.
Fail: Spurrier got a little bit coo-coo for coco puffs and threw the ball at the end of the game when a FG and OT would have sufficed. Stephen Garcia, master of the QB screw up, tossed a pick. Game over, South Carolina. Blew an 18 point lead too. Talk about an identity crisis.
