Pass/Fail FCS (1-AA) Week 7

Here is our Pass/Fail report for the FCS (1-AA) games for week 7.

Lehigh 21, Harvard 19
Pass: Chris Lum passed for 299 yards and 2 third quarter scores, and the Mountain Hawks rolled back from a 17-0 halftime deficit to win in Cambridge.
Fail: The Crimson has to be one of the most bipolar football teams in the FCS. Just when you think they are gooing to go on a roll, they fall on their faces. Lehigh had no run game at all, and still the Crimson could not hold onto that lead.

Robert Morris 38, Albany 0
Pass: Myles Russ picked up the slack again this week on offense by rushing for 138 yards on the day. Jeff Sinclair only completed 10 of 17 passes for 147 yards and a pair of scores, but still managed a pair of picks. The defense was outstanding.
Fail: The Great Danes managed only 132 yards of total offense for the day, and they were bulldozed early, finding themselves down 35-0 at the half.

San Diego 14, Marist 10
Pass: Mason Mills negated two picks by tossing for two scores to win the game. Mills completed 25 of his 35 pass attempts, and his second TD pass came with the Toreros trailing 10-7 early in the 4th. Great defense on the day for USD, as they held the Red Foxes to 25 yards rushing on 35 carries. Huge game for Godfrey Smith at WR, as he hauled in 9 grabs and a score.
Fail: Marist run game. It didn't exist and too much pressure was placed on QB Tommy O'Reilly. A great defensive game wasted.

Yale 7, Fordham 6
Pass: Yale special teams. Fordham had driven to the Yale 1, and on 4th down had the potential go ahead FG blocked and the Bulldogs preserved a 7-6 win.
Fail: No, it's not 1923. This score is not indicitive of modern day football. The Rams slowly circle the toilet bowl at 2-5. Ok, who are we kidding...they have left the bowl and are headed to the treatment plant.

Duquesne 37, Sacred Heart 17
Pass: Sean Patterson tossed a pair of 1st quarter scoring strikes, and the D returned a fumble 38 yards and the Dukes raced out to a 21-3 lead in the first quarter. That was all they needed.
Fail: Pioneer discilpine. 9 penalties were a killer, and the Pioneers were unfocused to start the game.

Penn 27, Columbia 13
Pass: The Quakers are tough to beat at home, and they have muddied up the Ivy race yet again. The Quakers rushed for 245 yards on the game, and hardly used the pass at all. Brandon Colavita led he way with 103 yards.
Fail: Sean Brackett passed for 240 yards, but was never able to scramble. The enitre run game was contained, and the Lions were held to just 44 yards rushing.

Villanova 48, Maine 18
Pass: Chris Whitney completed 20 of 25 passes, passed for 3 scores, and ran for 2 more, as he wrecked the Black Bears to get Nova back onto the public radar.
Fail: The Black Bear D gave up 559 yards, and they found themselves down 27-3 at the half. That's what we call a no win situation.

Colgate 44, Cornell 3
Pass: Nate Eachus (MVP Candidate) rushed for 291 yards and 3 scores as the Red Raiders rushed out to a 31-0 halftime lead over the Big Red on the road.
Fail: Cornell was held to 124 yards of offense and just 7 1st downs. The defense was a no show as well.

Lafayette 28, Stony Brook 21
Pass: The Leopards picked up their first win of 2010 season, and it may be one of the few. Ryan O'Neill passed for 2 scores, despite a very average overall performance.
Fail: The Seawolves committed 11 penalties in the 7 point loss, derailing several chances to take over the game.

Dayton 33, Butler 13
Pass: Steve Valentino passed for 208 yards and rushed for another 74, and the Flyers kept pace at the top of the Pioneer standings with Jacksonville.
Fail: The Bulldogs committed 8 penalties for 75 yards, and Butler was behind 19-3 at the half.

Bucknell 24, Georgetown 21
Pass: Sean Rafferty returned a pick 12 yards for a score with 3:47 left in the game, and the Bison picked up their first win of the season.
Fail: Again the Hoyas fail to show up against an opponent that they should crush. They are out of the race in the Patriot League, and they have to wonder what happened to a season that had such a proimising start.

Delaware State 31, North Carolina A&T 26
Pass: Jaashawn Jones rushed for 144 yards, and the MEAC loser bowl actually turned out to be one of the more entertaining games of the week. We can all put to rest the chances that either one of these teams should win another game this season.
Fail: Aggie futility continues, as A&T goes to 0-7.

Davidson 17, Morehead State 10
Pass: Jonathon Carkhoff passed hit Lanny Funston on a 71 yard TD pass, and the following two point conversion was good to give the Wildcats the win on the road.
Fail: The Eagles were held to 47 yards rushing, and a winnable game walked out the door.

Drake 14, Campbell 12
Pass: Drew Blackmon caught 8 passes for 122 yards, including the game winner early in the 4th, and the Bulldogs held off the Fighting Camels late.
Fail: Drake seemed to be suffering a hangover from their failed rally at Jacksonville last week. There wasn't much air in the tank, and it almost cost them when the Camels had a chance to tie late.

Monmouth 21, Bryant 12
Pass: Bobby Giles rushed for 71 yards, and the D had a big day stopping the run as the Hawks picked up a win after letting one get away against Robert Morris last week.
Fail: The Bulldogs were held to 60 yards rushing on 36 carries, and the passing attack was not mauch better off.

Hampton 7, Norfolk State 6
Pass: The D made a 1st quarter Andrew Chisolm TD run stand up, and the Pirates win ugly.
Fail: DeAngelo Branch rushed for 132 yards for the Spartans, but it was all between the 20's and the Spartans were held to a pair of FGs. The QB play on both sides was pretty bad.

Brown 17, Princeton 13
Pass: The Bears D shutdown the Tigers in the second half, and they scored 10 in the 4th to steal a win on the road.
Fail: The Tigers only generated 227 yards, and they were unable to hold a 13-0 lead at the half. This season just gets worse for Princeton.

Georgia State 20, North Carolina Central 17 (OT)
Pass: The Panthers are taking a page out of Old Dominion's book, and they are having wild success in their first campaign, much like the Monarchs did. When you consider how bad NC Central has been this season, consider this...The Panthers are a first year program, NCC is not. You should not lose to a first year program.
Fail: With all of the NCC penalties and turnovers, they were lucky to be in this thing at all.

Bethune-Cookman 14, South Carolina State 0
Pass: Androse Bell rushed for a score, and Matthew Johnson hit JeVaughn Reams for another in the third quarter, and the D made those scores stand in a huge MEAC showodwn. The Wildcats now control their own desitny in the league race.
Fail: The Bulldogs could not solve the Wildcat D, and they are now in a position that they would have to backdoor their way into any share of the MEAC title.

Wofford 45, Western Carolina 14
Pass: Mitch Allen, Eric Breitenstein, and Donovan Johnson all rushed for over 100 yards and the Terriers tore apart the Catamounts. Allen and Breitenstein each rushed for 2 scores as well.
Fail: Horrible QB play by the Catamounts turned out to be a real killer, and they have now lost two in a row and 5 on the year. Game over.

Liberty 41, VMI 7
Pass: Mike Brown passed for 231 yards and added another 46 on 7 carries, and Liberty crushed the Keydets. Chris Summers had 6 catches for 120 yards on the day.
Fail: VMI has lost two straight, and were held to 38 yards rushing. Race over for VMI.

Gardner-Webb 35, Charleston Southern 25
Pass: Patrick Hall rushed for a pair of scores, including the score that put the game away in the 4th. He also rushed for 129 yards on the day. The Bulldogs piled up 420 yards on the day.
Fail: The Bucs tried to keep it close, but they have now dropped 3 straight, and the curtain is falling fast.

Dartmouth 27, Holy Cross 19
Pass: Conner Kempfe and Nick Schweiger both ran for scores, and Pat Scorah returned a pick 43 yards for a score to give the Big Green the cushion at the end. Schweiger rushed for 169 yards on the day.
Fail: The Crusaders led 19-14 going into the 4th, and the pick and the D blew it. This was truly a terrible loss, as QB Ryan Taggert gave them every chance to win it.

Wagner 22, St. Francis 14
Pass: The Seahawks scored 9 points in the 4th and came back from a 14-13 deficit. The D held it up, and Wagner has now won 3 straight.
Fail: The Flashes are heading in the opposite direction with their 3rd straight loss. John Kelly's 3 picks were a killer.

Jacksonville 86, Valporaiso 7
Pass: Rudell Small rushed for 192 yards, Josh MacGregor passed for 320 yards and 3 scores, and Josh Philpart had 109 yards as the Dolphins cruised to a whopping 66-7 lead at the half. JU got a huge blowout win that those on the inside have been hoping for all season. The Dolphins picked up 658 yards of total offense.
Fail: Valpo's dignity. This is my argument against the NCAA forcing a school's programs to all fall under the same divisional designation. It makes no sense for Valpo to be subjected to lising like they do, week after week, and quite frankly, someone's going to get hurt badly. This program does not belong. Not being a hater here, just stating fact.

Furman 27, Samford 10
Pass: The Paladins outscored Samford 17-0 in the second half to open up a tight contest and take a road win. This was dispite the Paladins being held to just 105 yards on 43 carries on the ground.
Fail: Don't blame Chris Evans (157 yards rushing) or the D. They gave the Bulldogs every chance. Everyone else failed miserably.

Coastal Carolina 35, Presbyterian 7
Pass: Zach MacDowell passed for 201 yards and rushed for another 97 as the Chanticleers rolled over the Blue Hose.
Fail: PC held the ball for almost 9 minutes more than Coastal did, but leaves with nothing to show for it. A long, winless season gets longer and more winless.

Grambling 38, Alcorn State 28
Pass: Star RB Frank Warren rushed for 202 yards and 5 scores, and the Tigers continue to roll towards a possible SWAC title.
Fail: The Braves rushed for only 79 yards on 31 carries, leaving everything to chance o the passing game. Brandon Bridge did pass for 404 yards, but his 2 picks may have been a win killer.

Prairie View 45, Lincoln (MO) 12
Pass: The Panthers exploded with a 21-0 3rd quarter to put this game away. KJ Black passed for 274 yards and a pair of scores.
Fail: The Tigers ground game was impressive, but a lack of a passing game killed every chance at keeping the game close. The D completely melted down in the 3rd quarter, and Mason Keller tossed a pick 6 that helped the Panthers put Lincoln away.

Stephen F. Austin 30, Central Arkansas 7
Pass: Jeremy Moses passed for 333 yards and 3 scores to lead the Lumberjacks to a win over the reeling Bears. SFA has won every game since dropping the season opener.
Fail: After winning their first 3 games, the Bears have now dropped 3 straight. QB Nathan Dick was a man on an island as he was the only play maker for the Bears.

Sam Houston State 57, Southeast Louisiana 7
Pass: Tim Flanders rushed for 141 yards on 20 carries, and he scored twice. The Bearkats are putting themselves in line to battle for the Southland title with SFA, with 4 straight wins.
Fail: The Lions rushed for only 53 yards on 32 carries. Not getting it done, but that was only one of the myriad of issues.

UT-Martin 10, Eastern Kentucky 7
Pass: Derrick Carr passed for 290 yards and a score, and that score was enough to make the difference as the D held up their end of the battle.
Fail: The Skyhawk D held up the EKU rushing game, which is the bread and butter of their gameplan. There was no spark from the passing game, and the D was on their own. They did a great job stoppong the UTM rush, but they could not stop the pass, and it killed them at the end.

Florida A&M 31, Savannah State 0
Pass: Phillip Sylvester rushed for 153 yards and two scores, including a 69 yarder and the Rattlers cruised.
Fail: Another ugly day for the Tigers. It never gets any better.

South Dakota State 31, Southern Illinois 10
Pass: Kyle Minnett rushed for 144 yards and 2 second half scores, as the Jackrabbits are showing signs of life lately. Two upsets in two weeks.
Fail: I took a little heat for SIU never being ranked very highly in the PRS. I hope that it all makes sense as to why now. They aren't very good, and the numbers don't lie.

Illinois State 34, North Dakota State 24
Pass: Ashton Leggett rushed for 146 yards and Erik Smith rushed for 116 as the Redbirds ended NDSU's chance at competing for the MVC crown. Leggett scored once on the ground, and was on the receiving end of a Matt Brown TD toss. Brown tossed for 2 scores on the game.
Fail: The Bison saw their outside shot at the post season sail away on them with this loss. DJ McNorton had a 143 yard game on the ground, but it's all for nothing.

Richmond 11, UMass 10
Pass: Both defenses have to be congratulated, as both offenses were completely stymied. Richmond has put yet another monkey wrench into the entire Colonial race outside of top seeded Delaware.
Fail: This was a game that the Minutemen should more than have won. Richmond was on the ropes, and all UMass had to do was finish them, but now everything is a mess, and UMass is in peril.

New Hampshire 28, James Madison 14
Pass: The Wildcats pulled off the mild upset by outscoring the Dukes 15-0 in the 4th quarter. RJ Toman hit Terrence Fox from 13 yards out and the 2 point conversion was successful, and the Cats never looked back.
Fail: JMU has now lost 2 of their last 3, and the ship feels like it's starting to sink. They may very well fall out of the PRS (Bilo Football Poll)  top 25 this week. Offensive inadequacies are really starting to kill the Dukes.

Delaware 24, Rhode Island 17
Pass: Andrew Pierce rushed for 131 yards and 2 scores, and Pat Devlin played safe and efficiently, keeping the Blue Hens undefeated. Devlin completed passes to 8 different receivers on the day. The D even had a fumble return for a score.
Fail: The URI rushing attack, once the focal point during the Tim Stowers era, has become rather ineffective at times. This game was one of those times. The Rams are getting better every week, but they need to find more playmakers. It just takes some time.

Eastern Washington 35, Northern Colorado 28
Pass: Taiwan Jones busted loose for 168 yards and 3 scores with the third being the game winner. This game went back and forth until Jones punched it in with 3:47 left in the game.
Fail: Hard to find one standout reason as to why anyone really failed in this great game, but if you have to find fault, UNC's lack of a standout back in this game really was a problem. 4 different backs got touches in this game, and that sometimes prevents one or two solid backs from getting into a groove that chews time off of the clock.

Jacksonville State 24, Tennessee State 0
Pass: The JSU defense had another stellar game, getting the shutout in an important game againsta team that was starting to make a charge. JSU held the Tigers to 219 yards of total offense and forced 3 turnovers. The offense still needs work, but winning is winning, and the Gamecocks should retain their #1 ranking in the PRS.

Indiana State 38, Missouri State 35 (OT)
Pass: Ronnie Fouch passed for 311 yards, and the Sycamores came back from a 14 point deficit in the 4th to drive it into OT. Fouch's TD pass to Justin Hilton with 8:47 left in regulation was the game tying score. Hilton had 8 catches on the game for 146 yards. Who is this ISU team? They have been one of the most abysmal programs in 1-AA football for years, and now they are building fast. Great job.
Fail: The Bears are falling apart quicker than a Yugo. The defense gave up 508 yards, and they have now lost 2 straight.

Southern Utah 20, Cal Poly 7
Pass: Brad Sorensen completed 18 of his 22 passes, and the Thunderbirds have upset the apple cart in the Great West Conference. Tysson Poots was the biggest benefactor, hauling in 9 catches for 132 yards and a score.
Fail: I touted the ability of Poots all week going into this game, and obviously it fell on deaf ears in Central Cal, because the Mustangs almost ignored him all game. Many people were getting on the Mustang train, but to quote Lee Corso, not so fast sweetheart.

Northern Iowa 19, South Dakota 14
Pass: Billy Hallgren kicked 4 FGs and Tirrell Rennie completed 18 of 26 for 265 yards as UNI continues to be up and down. This week was up.
Fail: The Coyotes have now lost 2 straight, and the sun is setting on them. It's possible that QB Dante Warren has hit the wall.

Weber State 16, Idaho State 13
Pass: Vaingamalie Tafuna punched one in with 1:37 left in the game, and the Wildcats survived a major scare.
Fail: The Bengals have now lost 6 straight. The real fail was the play of Weber State QB Cameron Higgins, who tossed 3 picks, one of which was returned 100 yards for an Idaho State TD.

Chattanooga 35, Georgia Southern 27
Pass: BJ Coleman passed for 2 TDs and ran for another as the Mocs came from behind to stay in the SoCon race. UTC has now won 4 straight games after a terrible start to the season.
Fail: 9 penalties and 2 turnovers were a killer in the end for the Eagles, who led by 6 at the half.

Appalachian State 39, Citadel 10
Pass: The Mountaineers finally had it easy this week, as they rolled out to a 29-7 lead at the half. DeAndre Presley continues to impress, as he passed for 5 TDs on the day.
Fail: The Bulldogs were held to 197 yards of offense, all on the ground. They did not complete a single pass, even though they only attempted 6 of them. Wouldn't you think that they would have tried to pass at some point being down more than 3 scores at the break?

Northern Arizona 34, Montana State 7
Pass: The Lumberjacks got a huge day from their D, and Michael Herrick passed for 281 yards and 3 scores. Herrick completed 32 passes on the day.
Fail: The Bobcats were held to 123 yards of offense, and the defense gave up 404 yards. Denarius McGhee had a horrible time, completing 14 of 30 passes. The line also gave up 4 sacks. Nothing went right.

UA-Pine Bluff 21, Alabama A&M 14
Pass: Josh Boudreaux's 2 TD passes were the difference as the Golden Lions staved off a losing record and the Bulldogs.
Fail: Kaderius Lacey and Justin Jones both rushed for 100 yards or more, but Jones was held to 103 yards and was picked off. The Bulldogs have lost 3 straight, and 5 on the year.

Jackson State 49, Southern 45
Pass: QB MVP Candidate Casey Therriault ran in form a yard out with 1:20 remaining, and the Tigers survived a 4th quarter shootout. Therriault passed for 5 TDs and ran for the game winner.
Fail: Even though the Tigers won, their rush offense failed miserably, as did both defenses. The Tigers were held to just 52 yards rushing. Southern gets a nod for stopping the run, but failed to do so at the most important moment, and it killed them in the end.

South Alabama 26, Lamar 0
Pass: Lawson McGlon kicked 4 FGs and Josh Chestang returned a fumble for a score, as South Alabama took out Lamar.
Fail: The Cardinals offense is as flat as a board. Lamar is avergaing 7 points per game for the last two weeks, and the defense is starting to wear down slightly.

NIcholls State 47, Texas State 45
Pass: La Quintin Caston passed for one score and ran for another in OT, as the Colonels pulled off a big upset.
Fail: The Bobcats were heavily favored and wasted a 348 yard passing day by Tyler Arndt. This loss officially takes Texas State out of the Southland race.

Southeast Missouri State 41, Austin Peay 24
Pass: Henry Harris (RB MVP Candidate) rushed for 152 yards and 3 scores, while Matt Scheible added 116 yards on 17 carries, and the Redhawks continued on their path to the OVC title showdown with Jacksonville State.
Fail: Austin Peay was pulling an upset with an early 14 point lead, and then everything came unglued. The Governors turned the ball over 3 times.

Western Illinois 40, Youngstown State 38
Pass: Caulton Ray scored on a 10 yard run with just 0:05 remaining on the clock and the Leathernecks got back into the playoff hunt with a huge comeback win.
Fail: The Penguins had a 24-14 lead at the half and failed to secure it in the 3rd quarter, and the defense let WIU back in the game at every turn. YSU has lost 3 straight, and their season has hit the wall.

Tennessee Tech 34, Eastern Illinois 20
Pass: Jocques Crawfird rushed for 2 scores and the Eagles kept the Panthers winless.
Fail: The Panthers managed a horrid 39 yards rushing on 36 carries. The story of their season in a nut shell.

Montana 23, Portland State 21
Pass: Brody McKnight nailed his 3rd FG of the 4th quarter with no time left, and the Grizzlies have fought their way into a 1st place tie in the Big Sky.
Fail: Connor Cavanaugh was never able to get the ball deep at QB. and was held to 65 yards on 13 completions. The defense kept the Grizzlies out of the endzone in the 4th, but their bend but don't break defense failed when Montana got close enough for the FGs.
